If you visit Apostles and would like to keep coming, that’s wonderful! We’re so glad you want to continue getting to know us. We have created a few ways to help you become more connected.
We want to keep you in the loop. Find our facebook page and like it. This will help you see any announcements we may post. Sign-up for our weekly email newsletter (and check your promotions folder). Read the announcements section of the Sunday worship bulletin. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter.
We have just started a new ministry (fall 2018) to help our community gather mid-week. It’s called Table Groups. Each group is local to an area of Knoxville and will meet about twice a month for a shared dinner and simple prayer. Read more about it here and sign-up to attend the one closest to where you live. It’s a great way to get to know people a little better.
About once a quarter, we host a Newcomer’s Dessert. This is a time for anyone relatively new to Apostles to come to the Rector’s home for dessert and to talk. Typically there are a handful of staff or other leaders there to answer questions and to listen to what’s important to you about a church.
Attend an Event
We’re not an event-heavy church, so there are a few times in the year when you may have to wait a bit before the next event. Common events include: A Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper in February/March, Easter Egg Hunt, Bishop’s Visit Meal, Anniversary Party in August, Trunk or Treat in October, and a Christmas Party in December.
Every January and August, we offer a class during our 10:10am Spiritual Formation Hour to help newcomers discover more about Apostles, Anglicanism, and membership. This class is another opportunity to ask questions and learn more about our worship, denominational affiliation, and leadership structure.
The Discovery Course concludes with Member Covenant. This is an opportunity to formally become a member. Members make a covenant, with God’s help, to participate in the life of the church, work for unity, serve in a ministry, and support mission. You may read the Member Covenant here.
Why would you want to be a member? In addition to the spiritual discipline of making a commitment to follow Jesus with this church body, there are a few leadership roles that are only available for members. Each January, we have an Annual Meeting to report on the budget and field questions. While anyone may attend, only members may vote to ratify the budget. Our church leadership is supported by a council called the Vestry. It’s comprised of elected members from the congregation who listen to the heart of the Rector and manage the church property. Only members may be elected to serve on Vestry.
Each August/September, we make a new church directory. We use this as a prayer guide for our parish and heartily encourage everyone to have their picture taken and included. The church staff read through the entire parish every month praying for our members and regular attenders. Please plan to have your picture taken and included in our next directory. Those who do will also be asked to fill-out a Directory Card with more contact information for the directory. We do not post our directory publicly to protect your personal information.
We believe in a Biblical tithe (giving 10% of your income to God, through the church) and in making offerings over and above your tithe. If you decide to give to Apostles, you may do so in a way that is both convenient and meaningful. Many who receive a regular income find it best to setup a recurring gift on Church Community Builder (CCB). You may request a login and set up online giving there. Others prefer to use CCB or this link to make one-time gifts. Still others prefer to give in the worship service. Any of these are appropriate and received with true thankfulness to God.
If you are making a gift over and above your tithe, you may wish to consider the following funds: the Building Fund—used to pay off our mortgage, the Benevolence Fund—used to help those in need or provide a blessing, Flowers—used to provide flowers at Christmas, Easter, and funerals, or to St. Brendan’s—our daughter congregation in Maryville, TN. Any of these funds may be selected when giving online. If you are making a gift to a particular fund using a check, please designate the fund on the memo line; For cash, please use one of the envelopes in the pews.
